How long has SLOOH been around?
Otto is new, but SLOOH has been running continuously since 2003. With over 50,000 members in 70 countries, SLOOH is the largest live online astronomy community. Our members have gone on over 317,000 missions, and taken over 1 million pictures, and counting. SLOOH features a patented technology that makes celestial objects in the telescope appear automatically like a Polaroid over the course of a five minute mission. Our most avid members have confirmed several supernova discoveries, and will no doubt one day discover Comet SLOOH!
Where does the term "SLOOH" come from?
When you move a telescope from one object to another, you are slewing the scope. We changed the spelling because we put the "ooh!!" in slew.
What objects will I see on the missions?
Our goal is to show you the best and brightest of outer space, at the specific times that are the most ideal to view any particular object. For example, Mars passes close to Earth about every 26 months and when it does our editors emphasize missions to Mars. Every night we visit popular objects like the Moon, Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter, as well as the most beautiful galaxies, nebulae and globular clusters, including the Orion Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, the Crab Nebula, the Whirlpool Galaxy, the Pleiades and the Hercules cluster - to name just a few.
I Want to Capture SLOOH Missions. Can I Take Pictures?
SLOOH members have captured hundreds of thousands of images of spectacular space objects, and many are available for viewing in the SLOOH Member Gallery. On the mission interface, there is a Camera button that allows you to capture up to three images per mission. These images show up in your Mission Log once the event is complete. You can then print your photos, download them to your desktop or a storage device, or add them to the Member Gallery. The SLOOH Camera device also records the date, time and observing conditions for your photo.
How do I learn more about what I am looking at?
Otto leads members on every mission. Written by one of America's most popular and distinguished astronomy authors, his storyteller segments will help you grasp the scale and beauty of the universe, in addition to illuminating man's attempts throughout the ages to understand it.

Once you buy a mission pack, the amount of minutes indicated per mission pack will be deducted from your account. (Commander members can go on any many mission packs as available during the year of their membership). New mission packs will be launching all the time, and members can go on missions within a mission pack as many times as they like, at no additional charge.
What is the appropriate age group for SLOOH?
The SLOOH experience has been designed to introduce people of all ages to space exploration. While rookie stargazers are encouraged to start with the missions hosted by Otto, we expect even the most advanced users to appreciate SLOOH Master. Once we capture your imagination, we'll continue to add new and advanced features to hold your burgeoning interest. SLOOH is an active community, full of self-starters of every age, so once you have made yourself familiar with the site, please join our forums to tell us about features you'd like to see as we continue to refine the system.
What is the Advanced Mission Interface?
This interface is best suited for those who have completed their apprenticeship with Otto. Missions run every five minutes (weather permitting) in two separate modes: Editor and Member. Editor Missions are programmed by the SLOOH staff and can be viewed by all members. Member Missions are programmed by our members, and can also be viewed by all. Member Mission reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis, and can be made up to seven nights in advance. Our most avid members have confirmed several supernova discoveries, and will no doubt one day discover Comet SLOOH! In fact, SLOOH recently co-authored supernova research with leading universities, including Cal Tech. Drive for discovery yourself or sit back and enjoy the ride while astronomy experts narrate the experience nightly.
